Stars are made when
a person achieves extraordinary success in his/her career.
When you think of
Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan or even Kareena Kapoor, they’ve touched
dizzying heights of fame and popularity owing, primarily, to their unflinching
dedication to their work. No one will be able to accuse them of taking a
shortcut to where they stand today.
Poonam Pandey,
better known as the girl who promised to strip if India reached the finals, is
someone who exists because of this shortcut.
She is neither
breathtakingly beautiful (which explains the "Poonam Pandey is ugly"
Google result) nor is at the top of her profession. Then what is it that makes
her so attractive to the masses?
She obviously does
not believe in the 'less is more' theory which explains her penchant for
shedding clothes. While her strip-fest and ‘bathroom secrets” will continue to
bring her all the attention, she will never have the kind of impact that mega
stars have on their viewers.
Iconic legends like
Marilyn Monroe or Zeenat Aman or Rekha are irreplaceable because of the very
impact of the viewers. They held sway over their fans essentially because of
their exclusivity and the dignity with which they conducted themselves. Poonam
Pandey belongs to a totally different class and cannot even come anywhere close
in being compared with even the most average but respectable stars.
There was Mallika
Sherawat who stormed into the scene with reportedly a record number of kisses
in her debut movie. She dared anyone who tried to bow her down. Sure she loves
creating drama and grabbing eyeballs but there's no denying the fact that the
girl has worked hard to get where she is today.
Then there was
Rakhi Sawant who courted controversy with utmost loyalty for quite sometime.
Her public spats, controversial statements and faux Swayamvars to keep the
Indian audience glued worked well for sometime.
Ponam Pandey is no
different from Mallika Sherawat and Rakhi Sawant when it comes to chasing
instant fame but unlike them, Pandey's desire to draw attention to her work
seems almost non-existent.
She seems to have
taken the 'love me or hate me, but you just can't ignore me' syndrome to a
whole new level. The starlet thrives on hogging attention by losing clothes and
making controversial statements.
Even Sunny Leone,
despite being a pornstar by profession shows utmost dignity in the way she
behaves and commands respect from others. Poonam Pandey, on the other hand, has
trivialized her very existence by seeking to cash in on her body.
Very recently
Taslima Nasreen lashed out at her “attitude is like underwear” statement.
Irrespective of being a fierce feminist, Nasreen’s outburst is justified
because Pandey takes objectification of women to a disgusting level.
We love it when
women choose to celebrate their bodies irrespective of their shapes and sizes.
But, using one’s body to secure public attention and, as a shortcut to fame, it
drops down to a very demeaning level. Throughout history, women have always
been objects of desire and there is nothing wrong with the notion unless other
sterling qualities of a woman like her substance, integrity and strength of
character are not overshadowed by that desire.
